Retreat Purpose and Focus Audience: This retreat’s purposes are renewal, reflection, networking and relaxation for administrators/staff and VISTA members who are part of a Community Service/Service-Learning office from Pennsylvania, New York and surrounding states. The retreat is framed with different kinds, sizes, and configurations of sessions that create an environment to rediscover how we can renew our civic imagination.

Sessions 1-4: Nadinne Cruz will lead and facilitate these sessions that will focus on who we are as professionals; who students are; how we fit in our institution; and how we interface with community. Nadinne is an internationally respected speaker, author, and consultant on public service education. As former director of the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University, Cruz founded the Public Service Scholars program and taught service-learning courses for the Program in Urban Studies.

Discussion Groups: Sessions 1-4 will be followed by small group discussion that will give us a chance to further explore and share our thoughts and learnings.

Roundtable Sessions
: Small informal sessions with interactive presentations from practitioners around skill and content development topics such as institutionalizing service-learning, working with faculty, assessment, resource development, risk management, community-based research, student leadership/citizenship development, and Learn and Serve subgrantee reports. See below for a complete list of Roundtables.

Affinity Groups: Meet colleagues from similar types of institutions or with similar experience or exploring how to share resources.

Location: Bryn Mawr Mtn. Retreat Center, Honesdale, PA offers hiking trails, picnic tables, an outdoor theatre, a lake for boating, a gym, and playing fields. PACC/NYCC will have exclusive use of and access to these conference facilities. Bryn Mawr Mtn. Retreat Center is 45 min NE of Scranton, PA.

Accommodations: Surrounded by 200 private acres of storybook woods, meadows, luxurious lawns and unlimited recreational facilities, Bryn Mawr is a unique alternative to crowded hotel settings. All accommodations have hot/cold running water, indoor plumbing and electricity. There is a payphone for your convenience in the Dining Hall. The rooms do not have alarm clocks, telephone/internet access, or TVs. Linens are provided by the conference center.
